Press coverage of the event: The Hilltop !!!!!

TENTS OF HOPE

AUDate: Friday, November 7, 2008 to Sunday, November 9, 2008

Synopsis: The American Islamic Congress (AIC) and the PN chapters at the Universities of American, Boston, Cornell, George Mason, Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland - College Park, Massachusetts (Amherst and Boston campuses), Northeastern, UPenn and Sacred Heart participated in “Tents of Hope”: a three-day event raising awareness about Darfur.

PN members designed and painted a tent with images of peace and hope for the event, an artistic focal point to create responsiveness on Darfur. The tent was on display at the National Mall throughout the weekend.

The three day event was kick-started on Friday by a peace vigil at the Sudanese Embassy co-sponsored by PN.

On Saturday, Zainab Al-Suwaij, AIC’s Executive Director, led a workshop on the challenges of mobilizing Muslim countries to be more aggressive in confronting the genocide taking place in Darfur. The workshop focused on how Muslim governments have failed to acknowledge or publicly address the genocide occurring in Darfur, the challenges to mobilization given the restraints on freedom of speech, and what we, as citizens of the world, can do to change this.

On Sunday, Zainab spoke at the Tents of Hope rally on behalf of PN and AIC, closing the weekend with a call for action.
