Synopsis: The pun in this documentary’s title is a reminder that cutting-edge Muslim-American comedians are not only using humor to re-define their cultural identity in a post-September 11 environment, but also that their routines constitute a form of activism. “Stand Up” chronicles five young Muslim-American comedians as they “come of age,” each with their own unique brand of humor. Boston-native Tissa Hami, for instance, dons a hijab as part of her routine, offering a “Ramadan Song” take-off on Adam Sandler’s “Hanukkah Song.” Other highlights include excerpts of performances from “Axis of Evil” alums Ahmed Ahmed and Dean Obeidallah. Each comic’s humor cuts both ways, trying to claim a new space for Muslim-American identity that is outsider and insider at the same time.
