Sand and Sorrow

AUDate: Thursday, April 9, 2009 and Thursday, April 23, 2009

Synopsis: Turning his camera on the starkest contemporary example of intra-Muslim violence, Peabody award-winning filmmaker Paul Freedman(“Rwanda – Do Scars Ever Fade?”) joins African Union peacekeepers in the Darfur region of Sudan for a frontline view of the conflict. Narrated by George Clooney, “Sand and Sarrow” examines the Arab-dominated regime’s attacks on fellow Muslims in the traditionally black African Darfur – as well as the international community’s failure to stop the murder of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of several million people. Despite providing eyewitness testimony to wanton atrocities, the film gives voice to the growing movement to make “Never Again” mean real action against genocide.
