| The Lost World of Moroccan Jews: A talk by Raphael David Elmaleh |
|
Date: Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Synopsis: PN Sacred Heart University chapter and the Middle Eastern Studies Program presented a talk by Raphael David Elmaleh entitled “The Lost World of Moroccan Jews.” Mr. Elmaleh’s talk celebrated the sights, sounds, and extraordinary story of two millennia of co-existence and mutual respect between Jews and Muslims in Morocco: a history that is vitally important to the world, in which we live, convinced as we often seem to be that people of different backgrounds cannot possibly survive living next door to each other.
Mr. Elmaleh, Morocco's sole remaining Jewish tour guide and Founder of the Musée du Judaïsme Marocain in Casablanca (where he lives), has traveled the length and breadth of his native land gathering artifacts, costumes, photographs, books, manuscripts, and stories. Fluent in English, Arabic, Hebrew, and French, plus some Yiddish, Mr. Elmaleh has served as a guide to internationally-recognized photographers, leading philanthropists, guests of the Royal Palace, and individuals of diverse backgrounds. He is sought after for his extensive knowledge, his contacts in nearly every Moroccan city, and his charming personality.
