Ahmed Ghasmary Talk

Synopsis: The PN chapter and the International Relations Council at Wellesley College presented a talk by Ahmed Ghasmary on honor killings: addressing the urgency of combating these human rights violations. Mr. Ghasmary is a 24-year old women's rights activist, blogger, translator and writer from Jordan.  In 2006, he started a campaign called "LAHA" (“For Her” in Arabic), which originally aimed at mobilizing grassroots activists against honor killings in Jordan. The campaign has now successfully outreached to activists in Syria and Egypt on this issue as well. Honor killings, as explained by Mr. Ghasmary, are murders committed by male family members against their female relatives for dishonoring the family name. Mr. Ghasmary highlighted that these men are given nothing but brief jail times by the Courts in Jordan and Syria, allowing these practices to continue uncontested.
