Project Nur National Student Committee

Project Nur's National Student Committee is comprised of student leaders dedicated to building chapters on college campuses across the U.S. Members collaborate on national outreach via recruiting students, establishing chapters, and hosting events. Members also offer an example of responsible leadership to inspire and motivate fellow students to create positive, non-violent transformations in their communities.

Laila Alasmar is President of Project Nur - University of Massachusetts, Amherst, studying Journalism, Political Science and International Relations. She believes that the lack of information about different cultures and beliefs engenders stereotypes. She admires Project Nur’s mission to bridge that gap in the name of peace and enlightenment. She enjoys learning about different cultures, traveling, helping people in need, music and laughing. 

Abad Allawi is President of Project Nur - George Mason University, studying Government and International Politics.

Amira Ali is President of Project Nur - University of Baltimore, studying Business Administration, with a concentration in Entrepreneurship. She likes the beach, poetry slams, sports, spending time with loved ones, cooking, watching design shows, coffee houses, having a good conversation and being spiritual. 

Marianne Baesa is President of Project Nur – University of Maryland, College Park, studying Chinese. Born in the Philippines, her interests include doing community service, going to the gym, spending time with friends, traveling and learning about different cultures.

Assia Belguedj is President of Project Nur - Northeastern University, studying Architecture. 

 

Veronica Bernace is a senior at Florida International University, studying International Relations with a certificate in Middle Eastern Studies. To her Project Nur is a chance for young adults to work together while embracing their differences in the pursuit of a greater good. She loves reading, traveling, listening to music and learning.

Salah Chafik is President of Project Nur - University of Pennsylvania, studying Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, and International Relations. He believes that Project Nur shows that any transformative change for the betterment of the community only comes through non-violent and diverse efforts. He likes cooking, yoga, reading, and travel.

Frances Dávila is Officer of Project Nur - Georgetown University, studying Culture and Politics, with a focus on women and refugee rights in Latin America and the Middle East. Her interest in Project Nur stems from her passion for human rights in the Muslim world. She enjoys swimming, running, surfing and going to jazz shows.

Youssef Essex is the founder of Project Nur – George Washington University and Project Nur – University of Maryland, College Park. 

Dana Ashlee FakhreDDine is a sophomore at University of California, Santa Cruz studying Global Economics, Political Science and Chinese. She believes her involvement with Project Nur flows naturally from her tendency to look outward thanks to her parents (her father, a Lebanese and her mother, a Midwestern Anglo-Saxon American), who have provided her a lasting example of how people from vastly different backgrounds can learn, grow, share with and love one another. She is interested in learning more about China, yoga, global energy and food sustainability.

Saara Hashmi is the Secretary of Project Nur - Pace University, studying Biology. Project Nur allows her to channel her Muslim identity towards her passion for activism. She is also a writer with a deep appreciation for the spoken word and all modes of free expression.

Arsla Jawaid is Vice President of Project Nur - Boston University, studying International Relations and Economics. To her, Project Nur is a platform to bring students of all faiths and practices together to engage in discovering each others culture, and work as one voice to address pressing issues faced by all human beings. Her interests include researching German history, reading autobiographies, traveling all over the world and sleeping.

Maliha Khan is the President of Project Nur - Pace University, studying Finance, Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies.  To her, Project Nur is perfectly aligned with her desire to break the negative stereotypes surrounding the Muslim World.

Mhehvish Khan is Co-President of Project Nur - George Mason University, studying Psychology and Woman's Studies. To her Project Nur serves to change the negative perception of the average American when they hear the word Muslim or Islam, by providing education and service to the community. In her free time, Mhehvish enjoys watching movies or spending time with her friends.

Celina Kurani is President of Project Nur - American University, studying International Studies. She views Project Nur as a forum for people from different walks of life to come together as one human race. She loves to read, play paintball and talk about Texas.

Corina Shika Kwami is Co-President of Project Nur - Georgetown University, studying Culture & Politics with a Certificate in Muslim Christian Understanding. She believes Project Nur channels different perspectives towards a shared goal. Having come from a variety of backgrounds, she believes that working with others who share the reality of multiple backgrounds and experiences, enriches and expands one’s opportunities for action. Her interests include literature, language, dance, piano and athletics.

Donika Lumani is President of Project Nur - Sacred Heart University, studying Social Work. She believes Project Nur strongly expresses a mutual respect in our multicultural community by allowing Muslim and non-Muslim student to come together to share their beliefs, opinions, and cultures. Her interests include exploring other cultures, traveling and making a difference.

Alexander Mccartin is Co-President of Project Nur – Hobart and William Smith Colleges, studying International Relations and Asian Languages and Cultures.

 

Farhan Quasem is President of Project Nur - Cornell University, studying History and Biology. He considers Project Nur as a vehicle for positive change and understanding, bringing people together to raise awareness and enlighten hearts and minds. He enjoys hiking, cycling, reading, and traveling.

Reina Saiki is President of Project Nur - Brown University, studying International Relations with a focus on Global Securities.

Ryan Stelzer is President of Project Nur - Boston University, studying the Philosophy of Religion. To him Project Nur provides a voice for concerned students and allows us to collectively learn about our respective beliefs. He loves traveling, reading, writing, cooking, playing the guitar and listening to music.

Maryam Shakir is President of Project Nur - Florida International University, studying Philosophy and Biology.

Jessie Stefanik is President of Project Nur - Dartmouth College, studying International Relations and Religion.  She is passionate about intercultural understanding and supports Project Nur as a meaningful way to educate students and foster a deeper appreciation of the Muslim world.

Meg Sullivan is President of Project Nur - University of Chicago, majoring in Political Science, and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. She sees Project Nur as a means to bridge communities and expose them to new people and ideas. Her hobbies include singing, playing jazz piano, and reading the New York Times. 

Wajida Syed is President of Project Nur - Brandeis University. She is interested in pursuing studies that will enable her to create peace in communities around the world, however small. She enjoys photography, journalism and any activities with double-sided scotch tape.

Patricia Ward is Community Service Chair of Project Nur - American University, studying International Studies. To her Project Nur simultaneously allows her to learn and teach others about Muslim culture, religious coexistence, and interfaith diversity.

Syed Zaidi is Co-President of Project Nur – Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
